The proximity of the A9 trunk road means easy access from Inverness (35 miles to the south) and beyond. The property is composed of approximately equal areas of woodland and rough grassland on gently sloping ground with an easterly aspect. Due to its raised location it enjoys long views while retaining a degree of shelter from surrounding woodland. Most of the wooded area is designated as Ancient Semi-natural Woodland, the dominant species being mature Caledonian pine. Enter the old-growth stands to a world where time seems to stand still among the ancient stems, while the woodland fringes are dotted with some magnificent open-grown veterans showing wonderful contorted branching (known affectionately as granny-form). The grassland areas have not been grazed for some years and are now extensively fringed with gorse (gloriously yellow and fragrant when we visited) and maturing broadleaves including birch, rowan and willow. Aside from providing shelter and nesting sites for birds these areas also help preserve the privacy of this rather special place. Quarryhill and the adjacent woodland is appreciated by the local wildlife. Quiet observation will be rewarded with sightings of the local fauna including red deer, red squirrels and even perhaps a capercaillie, largest of the grouse family. There is an attractive ruined cottage near the centre of the property, last occupied in 1960 from where there are framed views over Tain and beyond to the sea. The wood is reached by a recently constructed stone track giving year-round 4WD access. Quarryhill is a microcosm of the woodland that historically covered much of Highland Scotland.
