This area is famed for producing high quality sweet chestnut fencing and the management of woodlands to support this industry has shaped the local landscape.  This is wonderfully diverse woodland to wander around, and a real showcase of some thriving interlinking habitats. There are pockets of early successional pioneer woodland, dominated by birch, ash and some hazel, with some alder in the wetter parts along the banks of the dyke.  There are areas of ancient coppice with mature veteran oaks, providing a high-quality timber source and a haven for wildlife. The current owners have been restoring the coppice coupes over the last few years, cutting the chestnut stools and converting them into fencing, and supplementing the regenerating chestnut with enrichment planting – the result is very healthy and vigorous regeneration.  There has been some felling of ash trees carried out under a felling licence in the northern part of the woodland, this has left some very useful clearings where the trees and flowers have taken advantage of the increased light levels.  Access is directly off the road, into a handy pull-in which allows one to open the gate before driving into the wood via a hard track. The hard track extends some way into the woodland before becoming an unsurfaced track, which is suitable for 4x4 access year-round, and two-wheel drive vehicles in the drier months. There are a series of unsurfaced rides within the woodland which could be upgraded up for year-round use.
