Located over level and gently sloping chalk and flint soils, the southwestern side of the woodland encompasses lofty ash, oak, hornbeam, sycamore, cherry, and beech which was once traditionally grown to supply a thriving furniture trade in this region. A number of the majestic beech stems could still yield some fine workable timber. The shrub layer consists of hazel coppice, groves of holly, and hawthorn, with thickets of ash and beech. The northeastern side of the wood comprises a blend of mature ash, oak, willow, and cherry coupled with some fairly recent planting of small-leaved lime, alder, wild service, and field maple. Come spring and summer the ground layer is festooned with bluebell, common spotted orchid, foxglove, primrose, violet, wood anemone, and yellow archangel. Wonderful open spaces towards the northeast offer tantalising camping prospects, along with delightful rural views at the woodland edge. Clearing an area here for a bench would be a great idea. The mixed mammal population includes deer (muntjac, fallow and roe), badger, hare, fox and wood mouse, while feathered locals include both great spotted and green woodpeckers, tawny owl, cuckoo, nuthatch, skylark, treecreeper and many acoustic songsters. It is understood that the wider wood won the Chiltern Woodland of the Year award in 2001. If It Were Mine It would be a good idea to look into deer management to help protect recent tree planting – sustainable wild game is a wonderful benefit of woodland ownership. Mounting a few trail cameras to trees would be on the to-do list. A domestic fuel supply could also be gathered here.
