Aberdeen is 15 miles downstream to the east and Banchory is two miles to the northwest. This charming town is ranked as one of the best places to live in Scotland and is an ideal location from which to explore Royal Deeside. The heart of the wood is stocked with tall clean-stemmed Scots pine dating from 1956. The pines are fringed by a belt of broadleaves believed to have been planted fifteen years earlier. Beech is the dominant species and their mature spreading canopies on the southwest side are particularly notable. Dotted across the wood you will also find a scattering of birch, willow and rowan along with woody shrubs like holly and hawthorn. Winter storms in recent years have opened some gaps in the conifers. Where this has happened the increased light levels have allowed abundant regeneration to arise. In particular there is a surprising number of oak seedlings which we suspect are the result of acorns buried by red squirrels, which are making a comeback in the area. Aside from oak there is a welcome variety of other saplings on the woodland floor including pine, beech, rowan and birch. With a little stewardship it should be possible to diversify the age classes and species composition of the wood without the need for costly restocking. This wood has the promise of a bright future and offers the incoming owner a variety of attractive silvicultural pathways. Our Forester's Thoughts Alastair says... "Storm Daragh brought down some of the Scots pine in December 2024. I would garner some useful mill wood and use the rest to stock up the log store. Leaving a few fallen stems to decay on the ground would benefit the bugs and beasties as well as the birds that feed on them. The abundant regeneration in canopy gaps promises to provide for the next generation of trees. In particular I would seek out the oak seedlings and apply tubes to protect them from passing deer. There is a regional effort in the wider area to eradicate the invasive grey squirrel. I would welcome the inclusion of Balbridie into any initiative that assists with this. A hard track access into the wood itself and a forestry shed (ideally using timber from Balbridie) would also be on the cards." Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
Click here to view full details on the Woods 4 Sale website
