As befits an ancient woodland, Hornbeam Wood is awash with bluebells at this time of year which will truly be a sight to behold for the springtime months. Alongside bluebells are other ancient woodland indicators; wood anemone and oxalis as well as many other wildflowers, yellow pimpernel, herb robert, celandine alongside ferns of several species. There is a sense of great tranquility to this woodland.
The woodland sits on a west facing slope, although the land undulates throughout, with level areas and none of the land is unduly steep. A public footpath bisects the larger woodland north to south, and serves as Hornbeam Wood's eastern boundary line, and an old track, now a restricted byway for pedestrian use only, runs along the western boundary.
Mature broadleaf, mainly oak but also beech, birch and holly and more unusually a natural stand of hornbeam make up most of the woodland, bar an area of coppiced hazel in the central section.
Towards the southern end of the woodland a shallow gorge splits the woodland with small group of conifer established on either side.
