Harper's Wood sits high on the Kymin, just south of Monmouth, on the west facing slopes of the River Wye gorge in the Lower Wye Valley. An area long valued for its scenic beauty, the woodlands here also form one of the most important areas for woodland nature conservation in Britain, reflected in the SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) status of the majority of the woodland.

Its feature of special scientific interest is as a semi-natural broadleaved Woodland with a well established diversity of habitat and species. This is reflected in the copious springtime ground flora of many different wildflowers including many ancient woodland indicators unsurprisingly! Wood anemones, the heart shaped foliage of yellow celandine, and the sorrel leaves of oxalis together with a multitude of the green spikes of native bluebells which, come April, will paint the forest floor a shimmering violet-blue in all directions. The distinctive whiff of wild garlic is already in the air in early spring, as its foliage emerges, soon to be followed by starry white flowers. Yellow archangel blooms when the bluebells fade.

Although Harper's Wood is essentially set on a slope, it is not overly demanding to make your way around and the ground levels off at many points throughout the woodland creating lovely spots for watching the birdlife or just sitting and enjoying the tranquility of this ancient woodland.
