A lovely, mature deciduous woodland, Katterburn Copse is located in a peaceful rural location close to Kiplin Hall, Catterick.
The tall trees are an attractive mixture of native broadleaves such as oak, beech, birch, sycamore, ash, and wych elm. A few of the older trees have ivy growing up them, providing evergreen cover for wildlife.
From the ridestop entrance, which is set on the plateau of a small hill, known locally as ‘Fatten Hill’, if you strike off south westwards, following the contour, you reach a dell enclosed by a couple of old fallen tree trunks and a striking standing dead ash trunk (an ideal bat roost?). In this space, a rustic bench is situated. This spot might make a good base camp, with the land then dropping gently away to the south and west boundaries that border farmland.
Along the edges of the wood, there are remnants of old hedgerows with views across the countryside and a number of large, ivy-clad oak trees on the slope.
The ground is carpeted with bright green dog’s mercury and dotted with native ferns, primroses and viewers with a keen eye, might spot violets.
