Coed Dawel (Quiet Wood) is a beautifully secluded woodland at the western end of a larger area known as Allt Dan Ty Mawr, and was formerly part of a larger manor house and estate in years gone by. The woodland overlooks Afon Cothi, a beautiful river that runs through the Camarthenshire countryside and the wonderful noise of the flowing water provides a constant burbling soundtrack.

The woodland is a mix of naturally regenerated mature oak and beech, which are home to a range of birds, bugs and other creepy crawlies. Growing randomly throughout the rest of the woodland is a variety of sycamore, willow, hawthorn, hazel, silver birch, ash and the odd self-seeded fir, creating a diverse species mix.

The understorey is relatively thick with young saplings, but interspersed with rhododendron growing on the slopes, and the usual woodland characters of bramble, wild grasses, mosses, ferns and a number of wildflowers and mushrooms.

The topography is a mix of sloped and flat areas initially but towards the western side, it levels out and stays as such until the woodland edge. This area, with a little clearance, could be a highly useable space for camping and woodland activities. There are the remnants of an old stone bridge down by the riverbank, historical evidence of what was once a well-used access route from the manor house – sadly long gone.

Access to the woodland is along a shared track, recently cleared and repaired to a high standard - it should be suitable for most vehicles all year-round. Half of the large turning circle at the end of the track forms the eastern edge of the boundary. Beyond here, a soft vehicle track leads back up the hill ending at the top of the slope, and thereafter access is on foot down to the main level area. There are some amazing views over the river and across the valley from the top of this track and it is a perfect place to put a seat and enjoy the views.

In summary, Coed Dawel is true to its name - a secluded and peaceful woodland, with only the sounds of nature and wildlife, perfect for someone looking for a tranquil retreat.

If It Were Mine
Initially I would clear the soft track leading to the top of the hill and down the other side. I would then clear a few of the smaller trees at the top of the hill and site a bench here, as the views out over the valley are beautiful.

The western edge of the woodland is a great place to do all sorts of woodland activities, but it is a bit overgrown, so clearing some of the vegetation would be top of my list. I would be tempted to clear a space, fell some trees, and perhaps build a place to shelter.
