The Property
Listed Grade II being of architectural and historic importance, Denham Mount is a charming Georgian villa built to the designs of the architect Robert Lugar in the early 19th century. Whilst Robert Lugar was regarded as a "seriously minded young man" he became known as "the country gentleman's architect" with much of his most important work being carried out in Scotland and Wales.
Denham Mount was originally designed for Nathaniel Snell and finished in a colour washed stucco under a hipped Welsh slate roof. Significant alterations were made in the late 19th Century and
internally the house now combines light and spacious reception rooms with comfortable bedroom accommodation on the first and second floors.
Of particular note is the drawing room, centred on an elegant, carved open fireplace and bay windows with French doors leading onto the veranda.
The dining room is perfectly proportioned with a fine Siena marble fireplace and intricately carved cornice work. The Veranda where part of the 1945 film, Blithe Spirit was made provides spectacular views over the gardens and grounds to the lake beyond.
More recently the morning room has been added, which adjoins the kitchen and is ideal as an additional entertaining area or alternative dining room.
The first and second floors, approached by a fine cantilevered staircase, provide flexible bedroom
accommodation, with each of the rooms being generously sized.
The Master bedroom enjoys outstanding views over the parkland to the lake whilst the second floor has previously been occupied as a staff

Location

Laid mainly to lawn, studded with a selection of mature trees, the architect Robert Lugar wrote in 1811 "this pleasing retreat offers everything that the mind of taste could require to produce comfort
and cheerfulness".

The gardens are a particular feature of the property and include some fine specimen trees including a Wellingtonia, Red Oak, a Tulip Tree, a Judas Tree and a Pocket Handkerchief Tree. Perhaps most spectacular is the beautifully formed
Copper Beech Tree which stands majestically to one side of the principal lawns balanced by a stately Cedar of Lebanon. In the spring and early summer months, the gardens are a blaze of colour with azaleas, rhododendrons and some fine Camellias. The lawns slope gently away from the house down to the Ha-Ha with the parkland and the lake beyond. Close to the lake is the Victorian ice-house and a charming folly. A gravel path provides a tranquil walk through and around
the gardens.
