Shrubbs Wood forms part of a wider woodland situated in pastoral Hertfordshire and is a short distance from the market town of Tring. Access is over a stone track via a locked steel gate.

The lofty canopy is mostly made up of beech, and is accompanied by instances of oak, sweet chestnut coppice, ash, cherry and willow. Several majestic veteran oaks also inhabit the wood, indicating its Ancient Woodland classification. Within the shrub layer, there’s a mixture of bushy holly, birch, laurel, young oaks, and maturing hazel coppice which looks to be around 60 years of age, providing an opportunity for a new custodian to fell and allow the stools to re-shoot. Some handy fuel would almost certainly be yielded from the old hazel. During the warmer months, the ground layer is decorated with woodland flora comprising bluebells, wood anemones, foxglove, primrose and climbing honeysuckle to name a few.

There are attractive glades, some covered with grass and bracken, which - once strimmed - would create the ideal overnighting spots or space to accommodate a mobile sawmill. If used for the latter, timber could be fairly easily extracted using either of the access tracks to the northwest or southeast of Shrubbs Wood.

The diverse mammal population includes deer (muntjac and roe), badger, hare, fox and wood mouse while feathered inhabitants include red kite, owl, buzzard, skylark, green woodpecker and robin, amongst countless harmonious songbirds.

Our Forester's Thoughts

Sam says...

"Gazing up at stars on a clear night could be a real possibility within the more open spaces in the wood; simply lying on a ground sheet under a warm rug whilst looking up is a pleasant thought. Some of the fallen deadwood would certainly provide a source of heat during colder months and I would also think about felling one of the less favourable trees for a good stock of logs to season. Stringing a parachute between suitable trees would make a convenient area to shelter from the rain."
