Kinachreachan Wood occupies a waterside location near the northeast corner of Loch Awe in northern Argyll. It is approximately midway between Oban and Crianlarich, both of which are about half an hour by car. The picture postcard village of Inveraray is a 20-minute drive to the south and Glasgow is a further 60 minutes.

Lying on the southeast side of the loch, the wood looks north to a number of Munros (mountains over 3,000 feet) including Ben Cruachan and Beinn Eunaich. Closer to hand there are attractive views to several wooded islets and the dramatic ruins of Kilchurn Castle. 

Aside from a few individual conifers, Kinachreachan is composed exclusively of maturing broadleaves, the dominant species being birch. A damper central swathe also supports stands of alder and willow. To the northwest there is a distinct rounded knoll jutting out into the loch on which are some large full-canopy beech stems above a clean floor of grassy glades – a magical location.

Much of Kinachreachan is described as being ancient semi-natural woodland with mosses, bryophytes and lichens characteristic of temperate rainforest. Thanks to the perimeter deer fence there are also plenty of regenerating saplings in the understorey along with some scattered holly and hazel bushes.

Access is taken directly from the adjacent public road via a short length of hard track leading into the southeast portion of the wood.

Kinachreachan benefits from extensive loch frontage and there is also an attractive burn (stream) meandering through the northeast part of the wood. With beautiful views, varied habitats and a private waterside location you don’t need much imagination to realise the opportunities on offer here.
