Leger Wood (pronounced ‘ledger’) lies at the upper west side of a larger woodland overlooking the attractive Borders village of Earlston. This oft overlooked part of the Scottish Borders is a quiet backwater dominated by rolling hills, farms, woods and moorland, and the area is steeped in history dating back to the Iron Age. The proximity of the A68 means that Edinburgh is under an hour’s drive to the north and Newcastle just over 1½ hours to the south.
Apart from a gulley of maturing broadleaves fronting the Craigsford Burn on the north side, the majority of the wood is composed of young Sitka spruce along with minor elements of Scots pine. The young trees are the successor crop to a productive stand of conifers harvested four years ago. They have now had two growing seasons and are performing well. The conifers are fringed to the southeast with a band of young broadleaves in tubes. The wood was ‘beaten up’ (failures replaced) in 2022 and is well stocked.
Leger is served by a well-found hard track (accessible to 2WD) which proved itself in the previous harvesting operation. This leads to an off-road parking spur near the broadleaf fringe on the north side of the wood. The wood enjoys wide views to the east over hills and fields.
Young plantations offer a most affordable route into commercial woodland ownership. Leger does so in a rather scenic location.
The adjacent plantation immediately to the southeast (Faulds Wood) is also available for those seeking a larger holding. Please click here to view Faulds Wood.
