Most of Balwil Wood occupies level and gently sloping ground in a tranquil corner of the Carse of Forth about 2 miles west of the attractive village of Buchlyvie. It is surrounded by a mosaic of woods and farmland with the Campsie Fells rising to the south and Flanders Moss below to the north. This attractive area is largely undiscovered and bypassed by many hurrying to Loch Lomond (which is about 15 miles to the west). Glasgow is 45 minutes to the south and Stirling is a 20-minute drive to the east.

Balwil contains a variety of species and ages from lofty conifers to woody shrubs, making for an interesting and robust woodland. The larger eastern portion has a healthy mix including birch, rowan, oak and willow accompanied by a stand of conifers (hemlock and spruce) on the cusp of production. Cross the small stream to the quiet western part of the wood and you enter a stand of well-spaced maturing sycamore atop swards of grass dotted with fern – an ideal and secluded recreation area.

This diverse wood with habitats ranging from high forest and grassy glades to damp hollows and stream frontage is a magnet for a wide range of woodland birds and mammals that live here. Roe deer, owls, woodpeckers and many woodland songsters were all noted on our visit.

Access is taken directly off the adjacent public road which runs the length of the east boundary. There is approval for the construction of a forest track on the north side of the wood.

Balwil Wood – small enough to manage but large enough to lose oneself in - offers an incoming owner a wealth of silvicultural, conservational and recreational opportunities.

Our Forester's Thoughts

Alastair says...

"With river and streamside frontage Balwil offers excellent amenity. Family fun and camping in the woodland glades beckon.

I would get a thinning licence for the conifers which are approaching production phase, and I would want to control or remove the patches of rhododendron (a non-native species) to prevent their spread."

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
