Cannel Wood is a small mixed woodland in the midst of several larger woods. Largely level, the landscape dips ever so gently to the south and is a pleasant, open, accessible space.
A couple of drainage channels cross the wood. These were created when the wood was planted and occasionally run with water in times of heavy rainfall. The rest of the time, they remain damp enough to support their own variety of plants and give home to a number of native amphibians.
The woodland was planted over the landscaped site of an opencast coal mine that closed in the 50's. The trees have taken well and are maturing nicely into a well-established woodland. An exciting opportunity to obtain a woodland in its youth with plenty of scope for additional planting and supplementing the existing biodiversity.
