Lickbank Wood lies in the far corner of the larger Moorside Wood, which in itself is located nearby to the Cumbrian village of Dearham, surrounded by agricultural land. Not far from the coastal town of Maryport, this is a quiet corner of Cumbria sitting just outside the Lake District National Park.
The wood is still in its youth, having been planted around 20 years ago on top of a landscaped coal mine, which closed in the 50s. A sensitive mix of planting has meant that the wood is maturing nicely, with forest floor plants such as foxglove starting to colonise. The wood is largely level with a slight dip towards the open grassy area along the southern boundary. From this standpoint, the first fringes of the Lakeland fells can easily be seen.
A small area of the wood, which protrudes into the surrounding pasture, has been clear-felled. This would be an ideal location for a small replanting project to replace the harvested conifers.
