Ridley Wood is what is known as a Plantation on Ancient Woodland Site (PAWS). This category of woodland is of great ecological importance and forms part of a larger network of Ancient Woodlands spanning back hundreds of years. The woodland was once cleared of some of its oldest trees, but Ancient Woodlands are amazingly resilient, with many of the key ecological relationships remaining, ready for restoration.
Ridley Wood lies just 15 minutes outside of Nantwich, a charming and well-appointed town, with Chester and Wrexham also close by. Access is off the adjacent road, into a generous area of hardstanding, which transitions into a series of stone tracks throughout. These tracks are sound, but are best utilised with a 4x4, ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) or on foot.
The towering canopy is made up of western hemlock, European larch, Scots pine, oak and ash, with the lower tree layers containing instances of willow, alder, hawthorn, rowan and field maple. The woodland floor is populated by wood anemone, celandine, bluebells, yellow archangel and herb Robert which all provide striking splashes of colour. Ridley has a great diversity of vertical structure due to the wide variety of tree ages present. Ranging from saplings - a result of recent enrichment planting of native broadleaves and strong natural regeneration - through to pole stage, early mature and veteran trees. There is plenty of opportunity to carry out further harvesting and firewood production here, and the useful outbuildings situated within the wood (there is one in Lot 1) could be used as a store for tools and machinery, or as a spot to take shelter and fuel up on snacks between tasks.
Whilst wandering around the meandering network of stone trails, one can expect to hear the calls of the whitethroat, blackcap and buzzard filling the air and may spot a treecreeper or nuthatch busily scampering up a tree. Weaving throughout the stems, one could also expect to see typical woodland mammals such as badger and roe deer whilst noctule bats glide overhead.
A striking mix of tree species, wildflowers and wildlife, with useful outbuildings and a handy stone track, Ridley Wood is an exciting prospect for those desiring an amenity woodland that has great conservation potential, and the scope for a small-scale forestry operation.
