The History
The earliest documented history relating to the estate dates to around 1107 when it is believed that the land was gifted to Roger De Muschamp by Henry I. A family feud led to a transfer of ownership to Mr Stephen Bulmer, who had married into the De Muschamp family. The land continued to be passed down through the generations until King Edward III took possession of the land where Middleton Hall now stands.

By 1821, the Middleton estate was under the ownership of Mr Stephen F. Gillum and then sold onto John Towlerton Leather in 1857. To this day, John is referred to as "The Father of Middleton" and he extended the boundary of Middleton Hall by purchasing the surrounding land, as well as adding a substantial Tudor wing to the existing two storey farmhouse.

John Leather's grandson, Colonel Gerard F.T. Leather continued the legacy left by his grandfather, although his efforts were hindered when the farmhouse burnt down in 1915. In 1925, Gerard started the rebuild of Middleton Hall using fixtures from nearby Haggerston Castle. The extensive redevelopment of Middleton Hall sadly led Gerard down the path of financial ruin, which inevitably meant much of the land needed to be sold off.

Captain Ralph Towlerton Leather became the final member of the Leather family to inherit the estate, before the sale of Middleton to the Greenwich Hospital Trust in 1945. Latterly Middleton Hall was purchased by the current owners, and an extensive refurbishment and renovation project began. The gardens and grounds have been restored to their original glory, embracing the influence of John Towlerton Leather.

Middleton Hall Estate
Middleton Hall Estate is nestled amidst stunning Northumberland countryside, combining both rural and coastal outlooks. Middleton Hall sits within the heart of the estate and is built from rock-faced stone under a graduated Lakeland slate roof. It has undergone extensive renovations in recent years whilst still retaining original period features including high ornate ceilings, a stone fireplace emblazoned with the house crest and the grand staircase.

Middleton Hall

An open fireplace and decorative ceilings continue the style and period charm. A secondary compact kitchen is situated immediately off the drawing room. Also off the galleried hallway is an exquisite sitting area focused around a highly decorative, carved marble fireplace adorned with cherubs.

A more modern addition is the delightful orangery, with underfloor heating, glazing to three sides and French doors leading to the sun terrace and garden. The orangery is positioned to give a relaxing and secluded location to enjoy the grounds which surround the hall.
